Question: Does laser tattoo removal work on dark skin? Answer: Whether or not laser tattoo removal can be done on dark skin is a very common question. Not all clinics are created equal, so it’s very important to ask a few basic questions before seeking treatment. At Inkfree, MD we have successfully treated many dark skinned patients at our Houston clinic. Our answer is definitely yes, but it is imperative that a few guidelines are followed.
Most important is the proper use of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. This laser uses a broad wavelength of light. It will target the tattoo ink while not removing the melanin (pigment) in dark skin which can lead to hypopigmentation. Another important consideration in doing laser tattoo removal on dark skin is the time span between treatments. While some of our Houston based competitors will perform treatments every four weeks, we have found that this almost always leads to damaging hypopigmentation and scarring. We recommend waiting at least 6-8 weeks in between treatments to allow the skin to heal sufficiently.
Additionally, having properly trained and experienced laser technicians is probably the most important factor in the successful removal of tattoos on dark skin. It is not enough to just have appropriate or the latest technology, it must be used correctly and safely. At Inkfree, MD all of our laser technicians have years of experience removing tattoos on all skin types and using our physician designed protocols.
The best way to discover your Fitzpatrick skin-type and evaluate your treatment options, is to schedule a FREE tattoo removal consultation (832-478-5669) at Inkfree, MD.
